Savings, in time

Your savings runway: how long the money would last

A balance says how much. A runway says how long: the number of days what you could reach would carry you if the pay stopped, at what actually leaves your account each month.

If the pay stopped tomorrow

864 days

2 years 4 months and 24 days on the £104,000$104,000 they could reach (cash, savings and investments they could sell in days), at what leaves the account each month.

Trim the flexible spending by a fifth and the same savings last 54 days longer.

An invented household, for illustration

What counts as money you could reach

Cash, savings and listed investments you could sell in days, such as the funds in a stocks and shares ISA. Not your home, not a car, not shares in a private company, and not a pension you cannot draw yet. A Junior ISA is your child's money and is left out too.

Leaving those out matters. Counting a pension you cannot touch can turn a runway of months into one of decades, which is a number nobody would act on.

What counts as leaving

Your spending, built from your statements, plus loan repayments that leave whether you spend or not, such as car finance. A credit card repayment is not added on top, because it pays for spending already counted.

The runway is the money you could reach divided by a day of that outflow. CoreFi then shows what trimming the flexible part of the month would add, in days.

Questions

How many months of savings should I have?

CoreFi does not set a target for you. It shows how long your own money would last at your own spending, and what changes would lengthen it, so the decision stays yours.

Why is my pension not included?

Because a runway is about money you could use if your income stopped, and a pension cannot be drawn before the minimum pension age. Including it would overstate how long you could manage.
